The red loop of the Tour of Flanders departs from Oudenaarde towards Geraardsbergen to experience the classic finale of the Ronde. In over 116 kilometres you ride straight through the Flemish Ardennes towards the infamous Muur-Kapelmuur. The place where the decision was often made in this monument of cycling. With no less than 15 well-known and lesser-known short climbs, this is by far the most difficult of the signposted routes.

The first kilometres towards and around Brakel are tough due to the climbs that follow each other in quick succession. Several fairly unknown climbs will surprise the cyclist. These climbs are so much more than pinpricks, but the amazing scenery makes up for a lot. The route goes right through the heart of the Flemish Ardennes. At the halfway point of the route, it is finally time for the Muur van Geraardsbergen and the Bosberg. This ultimate combination was for years the battleground of the real top riders. Several decisive demarrages were posted here.

On the past lap through the hinterland and along the Dender the rider gets a break. The way back towards Oudenaarde has a lot less climbs than the way out, moreover, they are not of the worst kind. However, the unknown Vissegem and Potteberg will still leave many a rider gasping for breath.
