10-02-2012Van Nicholas Photo Competition

Van Gogh. Van Rijn. Van Nicholas? Holland has produced some great artists, and we hope that one day it will seem natural to mention Van Nicholas in the same breath as those venerable names. For we believe that every Van Nicholas is a work of art, a Dutch masterpiece to be appreciated by aficionados for generations to come. We also believe that art is for the people, so we thought we’d give you the chance to win one of our works of art, by creating one of your own.

01-09-2011New: Van Nicholas Valkyr and Redwood

Van Nicholas reveals not one, but two brand new bikes in their MTB range at this year’s Eurobike. The Valkyr is their first full-suspension mountain bike, and although the prototype made its debut at last year’s show, this year marks the arrival of the production model. Joining the Valkyr at the other end of their range is the Redwood, an entry-level all-rounder designed to be a trail-thumping utility machine. “We’re so excited to finally get the Valkyr into full production,” said Jan-Willem Sitnicolaas, Founder and Head of Design, “but we’re just as excited about the Redwood. This is our first dedicated entry-lever Titanium MTB frame, and we hope it will inspire many more people to embrace the natural suitability of Titanium to the off-road disciplines.”

The Valkyr is a complete redesign of last year’s prototype model, with even better rear end rigidity and traction. They started from the bracket – which is made of one piece and also accommodates the pivot point of the 120mm travel assembly – and worked their way up to the top. They added new seat and chain stay bridges to increase stiffness, but drilled them out to keep weight low. To keep the rear arms moving smoothly, they opted for plain bearings (instead of conventional rolling bearings) because they require no lubrication, are water resistant and are easy to replace when they eventually wear out. It’s a full-sus machine that’s been fully thought out.

As a first Titanium mountain bike, the Redwood is a great introduction for any rider. It has multi-purpose geometry, optimised for short-travel front suspension. They have designed it to be suitable for configuration as a twintyniner, to run with gears or as a single speed, and with discs or v-brakes. There is room for whatever kind of tyre you choose, and they have even left provision for a rack if you decide to use it as a tourer or commuting bike. Like all Van Nicholas bikes, it benefits from a beautiful brushed finish that shows off the natural glow of Titanium, making this entry-level utility MTB a very tempting prospect.

31-08-2011New decals Van Nicholas bikes

Van Nicholas has several exciting new products and developments to reveal at this year’s Eurobike extravaganza. News about the new models joining their award-winning range of Titanium bicycles will follow, but first, Founder and Head of Design Jan-Willem Sintnicolaas has this to say about the process of creating the revamped decals now gracing their entire range: “We wanted our new decals to stand out, yet still complement the understated, contemporary aesthetics of our state-of-the-art Titanium frames. And in addition, it had to make sense from a production and performance angle. It wasn’t an easy task.”

The three main objectives of the redesign brief were to create fresh, contemporary designs; maximise the aesthetic properties of the frames; and present a strong Van Nicholas identity while maintaining clear distinctions between models of differing disciplines.

They have placed the model name decal face-up on the top tube to give the new design a contemporary feel. Using a bold, utilitarian font has stamped identity, without distracting from the side profile impact of brushed Titanium. The Van Nicholas logo on the down tube has been sharpened by the removal of its outlines and colour-accented wraps on the top and seat tubes help to highlight each bike’s design philosophy. All the decals are cleaner, stronger and reinforce the timeless Van Nicholas aesthetic.

But it’s the smaller details they’re most pleased with, as Jan-Willem explains: “We used a Titanium-like colour to create several smaller ‘hidden’ text decals, which we have concealed in plain sight at various places on the frames. You really have to look for them – almost like a hallmark.” Not that they hope you need too much encouragement to examine their beautiful Titanium frames, but visit Van Nicholas at Eurobike and take your time to discover the hidden decals.

13-05-2011VN rides for charity

On the 29th May a cycle team, headed by Jan-Willem Sintnicolaas, rides for children's cancer charity Kika at one of the toughest mountain bikes routes in the world, Transalp. The team will endure a six-day trip through the Alps from Austria to Italy. The route is around 600km (400miles) and includes over 12000m (36000 ft) of climbs. Please join us by sponsoring the team, visit www.transalp4kika.nl.

More about Kika: Thanks to information from now-completed gene research, the paediatric oncology specialists are convinced that we can develop new treatments that can cure child cancer not only more often but in a ‘child friendlier’ manner. But it does mean that we absolutely have to start innovative research specifically focused on child cancer. KiKa (Stichting Kinderen Kankervrij – Children Cancer-free) is soliciting funds for this special research, that could help children to beat cancer faster. More at www.kika.nl.

More about the team: Frank, Jan-Willem, Patrick, Rene, Ron and Tim all believe in giving back and use their love of biking to help good causes. Jan-Willem Sintnicolaas is the team leader and provides the titanium bikes for the event. ASPIDER supports the event.
